President Goodluck Launches Nigeria’s National Electronic Identity Cards

Nigeria has formally launched a National Electronic ID Cards, which all Nigerians will have to have by 2019 if they want to vote.

Anyway, many has indeed rebuke and condenmed this Identification card but they never the notice the most importance of it. All most Nigerians knows is condemned at first sights without knowing truly what is inside the package.

Presidents tried in bringing in this Electronic Card, there was an attempt to introduce national ID cards in Nigeria 10 years ago, nobody needs to inform you that its failed.

The launch event they said, is a remarkable milestone in the National Identity Management System (NIMS) as well as a huge achievement in the overall objectives of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), which has the responsibility to create, maintain and operate the national identity database.

This is what President Jonathan said at the launch in the capital, Abuja. “The card is not only a means of certifying your identity, but also a personal database repository and payment card, all in your pocket,”

And he also said that “I have taken keen interest in this project, primarily because of the pervasive impact it can have on every facet of the socio-economic fabric of our dear nation,”

About 30% of the country’s 167 million inhabitants have access to bank accounts, Bloomberg news agency reports. This was compiled according to Nigeria’s central bank.

The information contained in this new cards are; a person’s photograph, name, age and unique ID number – and 10 fingerprints and an iris are scanned during enrolment.

According to the informmation derived, these details are intended to ensure that there are no duplicates on the system.

There are enrolment centres in all 36 states and there is no fee to get the card, though people will be charged in the event that it needs to be replaced.

The Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC), which is behind the rollout, is trying to integrate several government databases including those for driving licences, voter registration, health insurance, taxes and pensions.

And to be sure that this was working, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan also tried it and it was confirmed working.

Although the registration is ongoing nationwide, Jonathan had earlier directed NIMC to conclude registration by December this year.

Through the authority of Mr. President, NIMC now has the power to issue a unique National Identification Number (NIN) to all eligible citizens, provide a secure means to access the national identity database in order to authenticate and verify identities, and to issue the e-ID Card to every eligible citizen.
